SABIC is a global leader in diversified chemicals with operations in more than 50 countries and over 35,000 employees worldwide. The Analytical Technology team in Europe (>30 FTEs) is part of the SABIC Corporate Technology & Innovation (T&I) organization and provides analytical characterization expertise to support technology programs across Strategic Business Units such as PETCHEM and SPECIALTIES. The laboratories are well equipped with an extensive array of modern analytical techniques in the area of NMR, chromatography, spectroscopy, elemental analysis, morphology and microscopy.

At SABIC we attract diverse talents and develop their leadership and technical skills. We are currently looking for motivated and independent student for a 6 to 12 months internship in Bergen op Zoom (The Netherlands) site with a starting date in summer 2020. The intern will have the unique opportunity to use a state-of-the art equipment and to work closely with SABIC technologists as a member of the analytical technology team to support our R&D efforts towards the development of new sustainable materials.

Job Purpose & Responsibilities

Characterization of Polymers and Hybrid Materials by Micro- Computed Tomography Scanner
Recently, the analytical department at SABIC acquired the latest generation micro-CTscanner for industrial applications and material science R&D. CTscan is a non-destructive testing technique allowing the investigation of internal and external structures, providing accurate 3D information on the geometry and morphology. The Micro-Analysis team is building expertise in X-ray micro-CTscan for the characterization of polymers and hybrid materials. Such materials, including foams and composites, find a wide range of applications, especially in the automotive and consumer electronics industries, which are high demanding sectors in terms of performance, safety and light weighting.

Polymer-based materials represent a challenge in computed tomography as they are composed of low density materials inducing a poor contrast. Several parameters can influence the quality of the acquired data and of the final reconstructed images. The aim of this project is to develop theoretical and experimental knowledge to achieve higher detectability, enhanced sensitivity and better accuracy. Two critical aspects will be addressed during the internship (1) establishing the relationship between the chemical composition of sample and the resulting physical properties of the material to the quality of X-ray images, and (2) implementing post-processing algorithms to better map the sample absorption, refraction and scattering to improve the quality of the reconstructed images.

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Flexible, creative and independent
  • Understanding of materials science and polymers
  • Preferably knowledge in the interactions between radiation and matter
  • Advanced knowledge in electrical engineering, and computing, preferably in CT reconstruction
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Good verbal and written English communication skills
