Characterization of Polymers and Hybrid Materials by Micro- Computed Tomography Scanner
Recently, the analytical department at SABIC acquired the latest generation micro-CTscanner for industrial applications and material science R&D. CTscan is a non-destructive testing technique allowing the investigation of internal and external structures, providing accurate 3D information on the geometry and morphology. The Micro-Analysis team is building expertise in X-ray micro-CTscan for the characterization of polymers and hybrid materials. Such materials, including foams and composites, find a wide range of applications, especially in the automotive and consumer electronics industries, which are high demanding sectors in terms of performance, safety and light weighting.
Polymer-based materials represent a challenge in computed tomography as they are composed of low density materials inducing a poor contrast. Several parameters can influence the quality of the acquired data and of the final reconstructed images. The aim of this project is to develop theoretical and experimental knowledge to achieve higher detectability, enhanced sensitivity and better accuracy. Two critical aspects will be addressed during the internship (1) establishing the relationship between the chemical composition of sample and the resulting physical properties of the material to the quality of X-ray images, and (2) implementing post-processing algorithms to better map the sample absorption, refraction and scattering to improve the quality of the reconstructed images.
