Internship Optimization of extruder, prevent by-product, increase recycling

Reference Number
Bergen op Zoom
Job Type
Vacancy Category
Manufacturing & Engineering

  • The Flexible Compounding Plant – FCP – is a so-called finishing plant. Polymers undergo a last treatment before shipping. The end product consists of polymers (thermoplasts or plastics) as granules.
  • In FCP, polybutylene-terephtalate (PBT) and polycarbonate (PC) are mixed with various other substances such as fillers, (UV-)stabilisors, flame retardants, pigments, recycled material or other polymers. The mixture is extruded at high temperature, then cooled, cut in granules, stored and shipped.

Job Purpose & Responsibilities

Part of the molten polymer from extruders falls on the floor and solidifies as ‘drools’, which are reworked. However, outlets for reworked drools are increasingly hard to find. A challenge is to prevent drool formation.

Techniques to prevent drool formation exist, e.g. a hot water granulator. SABIC has looked into it but shelved the idea. Other techniques exist as well.

Main tasks for this internship are:

  • Identify and assess techniques to capture and process molten polymer before it gets to the floor, for FCP.
  • Assess similar situation at the other two compounding plants at site: Noryl ® and Lexan ®.
  • Write a proposal to implement such techniques at these three plants.

  •  Able to speak and write in Dutch
  • Knowledge of process technology and/or extruder technology
